The announcement was made last Friday in Yaounde by the Director of the British Council, Jenny Scott, during the official launching of the project.

"Bring the Noise" is part of British Africa 2007 project, a long term programme of cultural interaction to connect people in Africa and the UK. The project will bring together musicians, artists and filmmakers from Africa and the UK to collaborate, share, create and perform. It will explore identity and experiences from many cultures with the aim of increasing appreciation of African music in the UK and to highlight the power and beauty of creative fusions in the arts resulting from the criss-cross of influences between Africa and the UK. Speaking during the press conference, the director of the British Council, Jenny Scott said that the British Council knows that artists in Cameroon do not have enough venues to showcase their work. She used the occasion to call on artists to apply to the British Council to be part of the project. Asked how the selection will be done, Jenny Scott said the British Council will organise exhibitions in the British council before selecting the best artists. According to her, the exhibition will also enable artists showcase their work even if not in the international scene but at least in Cameroon. The exhibition will be organised next year.

Africa 2007 is a three-year regional programme for East and West Africa. The programme aims at exploring the notions of culture and identity to generate fresh ideas and create new understandings between individuals and communities in Africa and the UK. The other two programmes that are being launched in Cameroon are "Belongings", which gives the opportunity for young people from Africa and the UK to meet through a series of international exchanges and "Different lives", takes a fresh and innovative approach to increasing the number of professional relationships between countries in Africa and the UK. The projects offer an opportunity to reflect on two anniversaries namely; two hundred years ago Parliament in Britain passed the Act to abolish the slave trade in the British Empire and 40 years of British Council’s work in Cameroon.

Elizabeth MOSIMA

The project "Bring the Noise" was officially launched last Friday in Yaounde.
