Vice Prime Minister, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development receives New Year Wishes from his staff in Yaounde.

Plans to boost agricultural production and rural development this year in Cameroon are expected to be made public today at the Yaounde Conference Centre where the Vice Prime Minister, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Jean Nkouete will receive New Year Wishes from his staff.

The ceremony will start at 1:001 p.m.

Health experts in Cameroon meet to discuss promotion of mother and child care in the country.

Health experts in Cameroon will next week, hold a series of activities designed to promote mother and child care in the country.

Ahead of the one-week event, the Minister of Public Health, André mama Fouda will hold a press briefing today in Yaounde in the presence of the government’s partners in the health domain.

The ceremony to hold at the Yaounde Hilton begins at 10:00 a.m.

Cameroonian journalists embark on 2-week course on environment reporting.

Journalists from different media houses in Cameroon will today at the British Council in Yaounde, begin attending a two-week course designed to give them the skills they need to report on the impact of climate change.

The course has been organised by the British High Commission in Yaounde in partnership with the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association.

Anglophone Writers’ Association launches poetry competition.

A national poetry competition fro Cameroonians aged 18 and above and for children between 8 and 17 has been launched by the Cameroon Anglophone Writers’ Association.

The poems in English, that must not exceed 20 lines and must not have been previously published will fetch prizes ranging from 100.000 F CFA down to 25.000 F CFA in the adult category and from 50.000 F CFA to 10.000 F CFA in the children’s category.

According to a release signed by the president of the Anglophone Writers’ Association, John Nkengong Nkengason, competitors have until 30 June 2008 to each submit only one poem, preferably by e-mail attachment to acwapoetrycompetition@yahoo.com.

Sports updates.

The 23 players selected to represent Cameroon at the forth-coming African Cup of Nations in Ghana are expected in Yaounde today, 14 January 2008 to receive what is described as blessings from the authorities and the public before they go on the expedition.

The Lions ended their last training session yesterday in Burkina Faso with a 5 – 1 victory over a local team.

On the national scene, day-7 matches of the MTN Elite 1 football Championship were played yesterday with new-comers Tiko Unied walloping defending champions, Cotton Sport Garoua 4 – 1.

Still in the South West Province, Mount Cameroon FC Buea recorded their first victory in the competition beating Caiman Douala 2 – 1.

The other day-7 results recorded are as follows :

  • Union Douala 2 – Ngaoundere University FC 0,
  • Foudre Akonolinga 1 – Lion Ngoma Ebolowa 1,
  • Sable Batie 2 – Astre Douala 0,
  • Fovou Baham 2 – Canon Yaounde 0,
  • Unisport Bafang 1 – Tonnerre Yaounde 0,
  • Esperence Guider 1 – Aigle Dschang 1.

Musique : Fatal Symbol rape ses misères

Le jeune artiste a présenté la maquette de son album au public de Yaoundé samedi dernier.
Justin Blaise Akono –  Devant une quinzaine de personnes, un après-midi de samedi dans un cabaret en construction au quartier Mballa II, un jeune homme à peine sorti de l’adolescence, interprète une chanson, "Le bon, la brute et le truand". Fatal Symbol "rape". A la place de musiciens pour l’accompagner, une musique issue d’une boîte à rythme que manipule un disc jockey. L’artiste parle de ses débuts en musique. "C’est depuis 1998 que je commence à composer mes chansons", indique-t-il.

Dans une autre chanson Rap, sous fond Raggae, cette fois en compagnie des musiciens du cabaret, Fatal Symbol peint les misères des jeunes diplômés en chômage pour qui "un billet de kolo" (1.000 Fcfa) est très important pour passer la journée. "Les mouches" est l’une des quatre chansons que fatal Symbol interprète. Celle qui remporte le plus de sympathie du public. Fatal déclare la aux homosexuels à travers
Cette chanson qui s’inscrit dans le contexte de l’actualité avec le phénomène des listes l’année dernière a été composée par l’artiste et animateur de télévision Foly Dirane. "J’ai accepté d’interpréter cette chanson parce que je suis un artiste engagé". Mais, son engagement semble lui causer des misères. Il n’a pas encore trouvé de producteur. Il révèle que des scènes lui ont été interdites. Il affirme même avoir décidé de changer le titre de son album à cet effet, passant de "les mouches" à "clandestins".

D’une manière générale, Fatal Symbol évolue tout seul. Il ne se fait pas accompagner de choristes pour des couplets que ces derniers auraient pu reprendre. "J’ai essayé de monter un groupe et cela a mal marché", explique celui qui est entré dans une chorale afin d’apprendre à chanter. Toutes ses chansons sont en Français alors que la tendance en Afrique est à l’originalité africaine dans les musiques urbaines. "Je ne veux pas imiter ce qui se passe au Cameroun. Le Rap est universel", pense-t-il avant de se rétracter en estimant : "Je m’efforce à ce que chaque Camerounais se reconnaisse dans ma musique. Soit par les paroles, soit par le fond musical".

Agé de 23 ans, Fatal Symbol, Stéphane Ebodé de son véritable nom, est un ancien pasticheur de l’émission télévisée "Délire" que Foly Dirane présente sur la Cameroon Radio and Television où il a imitera des artistes de renommée mondiale tels que le Tchadien Mc Solaar ou les Américains Mc Hammer, Shaggy. Il espère trouver un producteur à travers un Ivoirien, qui vient d’ouvrir un cabaret dans la ville.
