Startling Revelations
Marafa Hamidou Yaya answered questions from the press after reading out his preliminary statement.
On the manipulation of youths:
Several meetings had been held in January 2008 by the Social Democratic Front to launch “Operation Kenya” with the aim of destabilizing the city of Douala. The Governor having learnt of the plan issued an order banning all street demonstrations in the Littoral Province till further notice in order to nip the plan in the bud. Late in January 2008, a National Executive Committee meeting was held in Chairman Fru Ndi’s residence in Bamenda to fine tune strategies for nationwide street demonstrations.
It was planned that members of parliament and leaders of the civil society would participate in the demonstrations. At the same time, SDF youths from all over the country were trained in a seminar in Bamenda on how to effect political change from the streets.
A notorious criminal who had jumped cell in New Bell prison, Douala was spotted in Bamenda in Chairman Fru Ndi’s car. The criminal was later on arrested and taken back to prison in Douala.
On the allegation that some demonstrators were transported from town to town to cause destruction:
Before the strike, information was gathered that truck loads of ambulant youths were to be ferried from Douala, Bafoussam and Bamenda to Yaounde to participate in the demonstrations. On February 27 three truck loads of youths from Douala were intercepted by the forces of law and order at Mbankomo at the entrance to Yaounde. On February 25 another vehicle was intercepted by security forces at Makenene from Bamenda on their way to Yaounde. Most of the youths had no identification papers on them.
On the kidnapping of two foreigners:
Two Italians were kidnapped in Douala and carried to Bamenda. The kidnappers demanded a ransom. Negotiations were carried out and no ransom was paid. They were later released without harm. The children of some important businessmen were also targeted. In fact all acts of terrorism.
On the suspension of the Mayor of Njombe-Penja Council:
The mayor was suspended for recklessness in the management of the council. He refused to respect procedure in the management of council finances. He also led a band of youths to attack a gendarmerie security post in town.
